Abstract
In recent years, there has been a rising interest in the role of transformation in Turkey. Most transformation projects or practices are deliberated reproduction of physical structures including social change. Karakoy is the one that not only erasing history is at stake but also cultural values in danger. Thus, the approach of this study is shaped by an architecture and urban design tradition to find out alteration of urban atmosphere depending on social and physical change while determining its’ influence on people. As such, in consequence of physical change, the aim of the study is to express how people become part of an urban atmosphere. Methodically, it is examined with measuring urban atmosphere in 3 different ways which are to define urban pattern and environment using its urban aesthetics’ characteristics restricted to visual and physical, to find out how people feel the city in aspects of aesthetic and culture as characterising atmosphere, also, to get understanding of design perspective by determining physical elements in the historical process. The obtained data are analyzed by mapping techniques (changing urban structure) and observation of behaviours, sensations and other human-space interactions. However, it is crucial to evoke that atmosphere results not only from physical space and the interaction of spatial elements/objects but also cultural and social characters and non-material factors. Indeed, atmosphere is an important element, displays moods and feelings depending on sensation. This helps to understand atmosphere as an analytical concept, attract attention in urban design studies.
