Abstract Summary
How Smart sustainable cities are dependent on components like compact development, sustainable innovations with wide information & Communication Technology. Integration of compact land use and intelligent public transport system in Smart cities releases many pressures of rapid urbanization through organised compact land use, easing out travel, providing multimodal options of travel and above all, better quality of life with other basic services. To serve such integrated services to become sustainable cities where many governing organizations became responsible to coordinate with each other and provide sustainable services. Defining the Smart & Sustainable City means Delivery of the urban services in efficient way with ICT component in best possible manner for the benefit of urban residents which enhances quality & performance of urban services. The conceptualization of Smart City, therefore, varies and depending on the level of compact development, willingness to change with resources and aspirations of the city residents. In my opinion Smart sustainable cities concept reiterates what we have already been doing so far as urban planners. “Efficient use of resources to get the most benefit with minimum cost (and damage). The concept of sustainable planning itself is "smart" - do not blunder though but plan ahead. However, the smart sustainable city concept today in its ideological sense of the term that has more to do with the use of ICT in increasing the efficiency and accuracy of our planning systems. Smart = the most benefit. So, if you monitor your water supply with computers and reduce non-revenue water that is smart! If you make your cities compact and save time and fuel costs, smart! If you convert your waste to energy, get a little bit extra energy to spend, smart! If you have transport systems that carry more in less space, time and cost, smart! If you plan complimentary land uses near each other, smart! Smart sustainable Cities require connectivity and coordination which makes city more compact & coordinated through effective integration of compact development and ICT. This paper offers a critical review of the key issues and relation of compact development with ICT component to planning & development of Smart Sustainable cities to secure a sustainable urban future for all.
